This session will help the attendee to understand why powder or material flow problems occur and what cost-effective steps can be taken to solve the problems. The discussion focuses on the two types of flow occurring in bins, hoppers, and silos, as well as the basics of material flow testing. At some point, almost all pneumatic conveying systems incorporate the need to change the direction of material flow for it to reach the final destination point in the most efficient way possible. The decision of where to install a turn is usually obvious but that’s when the choices start to pile up. What type of bend do I use? What shape of the bend is most suitable? Which bend design causes the least damage to my product? What if I need to make another direction change quickly? How do I account for those bends in my system design? Is it better to put in a high-cost, special wear-resistant bend or stay with a low-cost bend that is easy to replace?
